Church software is our ministry at By the Book. Our mission is to bring the best possible software solutions to those we serve. Whether large or small, we believe that all need great tools to help them fulfill their own ministry. This is why we constantly evolve and innovate. We also believe you should be able to pick up the phone and talk to someone when you have questions and we don't think you should have to break the bank in the process! We strive to better serve you so you can serve others.
By the Book was founded in 1992 by Gene McGlasson. It was actually called By the Numbers back then. Gene, a retired engineer and pilot, developed Roll Call for the church he was attending at the time. He realized there were many churches that could benefit from this software so he began marketing it. In 1998 Gene and Laura (his wife) moved the business to Colorado and it officially became By the Book. From 1998 to 2002 Gene and Laura continued to develop the functionality of Roll Call and Honor Roll.
In 2002 David and Kim Conley felt called to use their database development skills to serve the church. As the Lord would have it, Kim met Gene and Laura at a trade show in Denver and a wonderful partnership was born. Kim started working at the By the Book office for the next several years to learn the business. August 2004, David and Kim officially purchased the business from them.
In 2004 the business was moved to northern Illinois. Since that time we have built a team of developers and support staff to serve this growing ministry.
In addition to supporting churches that use Roll Call, Kim enjoys being a parent to two amazing teenagers alongside her husband, David (who happens to also work within shouting distance). She may be spotted in the wild hiking, biking, skiing or snowshoeing.
Leading the charge in this mighty software battle, David wields the sword of programming and shield of database knowledge. He also enjoys cleaning gutters, picking up the yard, fixing things and other fatherly duties. He and his wife Kim, cheer for the Broncos when possible.
Caroline enjoys being a wife and mom to three… a son headed to college, a daughter headed to high school, and another daughter in grade school. Besides attending their numerous sports and music activities, she enjoys rooting for the Chicago Bears with her husband and taking adventurous vacations with her family to various parts of the U.S. each year.
After spending the day on the task of testing software, Chris enjoys spending time outdoors enjoying nature or working around his property when the weather is nice. When the weather is not so nice he spends time cooking or messing with his computer.
Outside of By the Book, Josh's superpowers include being a husband/dad, playing guitar, writing songs, and other geekery involving computers and code. He has a hard time passing up a board game of Settlers of Catan.
Jill is a mom of two girls whose passion is drag racing. When she is not spending time with her husband and girls at the drag strip, she enjoys walking, reading and baking.
The founding father of Roll Call and Honor Roll. Calls the great state of Montana his home.
